Meditation and the Yogic Yamas & Niyamas

In the Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch practices, exercises, rituals, programs we practice and cultivate a number of personal and social ethical principles taken from the classical Yoga tradition and philosophy.

I have posted meditations and reflections for the five yama-s and the 5 niyama-s of Patanjali’s Yogasūtra-s (योगसूत्र) on our Meditation and Reflect site. Those posts were available from April 6 to April 18, 2020 and followers of this site can access them now using the links below. Since I have posted my thoughts on the yama-s and niyama-s, I shall not repeat my reflections here but refer you to the meditation site.

In addition to the yama-s and niyama-s there are about 40 other topics in yogic philosophy that I will discuss as we progress but for the moment I’d like to focus on three principles, which I consider to be pillars of homoerotic yogic Tantra (तन्त्र), and which should be practiced together with the yama-s and niyama-s. The three are viveka (विवेक), abhyāsa (अभ्यास), and vairāgya (वैराग्य), clear thinking, diligent practice, and non-attachment, respectively.

During meditation abhyasa is the diligent effort for staying focused; vairagya pulls the wandering attention back to focus. Awareness of the vṛtti-s (वृत्ति) is vairagya. Vairagya is not a struggle with urges and desires, it is more of a disinclination resulting from abhyasa, letting go of our attachments, releases one of the fetters that keep us from attaining liberation.

Vṛtti-s (वृत्ति)are the thoughts and perceptions that preoccupy us; they are not necessarily bad or harmful and may actually be good in their end effects but in some instances they are distractions, and interfere with focus. If a vṛtti (वृत्ति) distorts perception if is negative; it it enhances clarity and tranquility it is positive; otherwise a vṛtti (वृत्ति) is simply neutral. Meditation or dhyana quiets the heart-mind and thus calms the vṛtti (वृत्ति).

As I mentioned above, the ten fundamental principles that guide the homoerotic yogic tantric man are explained in the meditations on the 108 Days of Meditation & Reflection site at days 33-42  of the 108-day cycle but followers of this site can access them now, for study, using the links below. So, just to refresh you:

The five principles of social ethical conduct or yama-s (यम) are:

The five principles of personal ethical conduct or niyama-s (नियम) are:

    1. Śauca (सौच) physical and psychological cleanliness, personal hygiene
    2. Santoṣa (सन्तोष) being content with what you have
    3. Tapas (तपस्) “burning off” of obstacles and impurities impeding your progress.
    4. Svādhyāyā (स्वाध्याय) self-study, self-reflection, self-study for awareness.
    5. īśvarapraṇidhāna (ईश्वरप्रणिधान) humility, surrendering, dedicating the fruits of your labor to the Supreme

It is important to note that none of these principles is practiced in isolation; they all interconnect and interrelate in everything the homoerotic tantric man does. These principles and their supporting concepts — I’ll introduce and discuss these as we progress through our initial program work — are all inegrated into the life and lifestyle of the Tantric Warrior, the Kṣatriya (क्षत्रिय) or the Tantric Hero, the Vīra (वीर).

In a recent Twitter post, a Berlin masseur offering what he calls “gay massage” asks:  What would God Think?

The Berlin masseur posting the tweet writes:

“If you are thinking getting involved in any kind of spirituality, – a religion, philosophy or system – check and see what their position on sex is. I trained with Gay Love Spirit, who are dedicated to helping gay men to have a spiritual life while also celebrating sexuality.” (Embodied GMB)

What indeed would God think? What does the gay masseur think or hope that God would think? What kind of God is the god of the masseur? Does he even believe in a God?

What would God think?

As a theologian and professional psychospiritual care provider, these questions are certainly relevant both to me in academic terms, and very importantly, to the men the masseur is attempting to attract, as well as to the fundamental principles of Homoerotic Tantra℠:Mascul-IN-Touch℠

The masseur recommends, “If you are thinking getting involved in any kind of spirituality, – a religion, philosophy or system – check and see what their position on sex is.” That is one of the most confused statements I have read in a long while! The last time I saw something that confused, it was in a YouTube video by one JT of T4GM.

First of all, the masseur appears to have no clue what “spirituality” is, and if I am reading his statement correctly, given the syntax and grammar, he is conflating spirituality with “religion, philosophy[,] or system.” He appears to be ignorant of the teachings of most world faith and belief traditions, that is, that the biological behavior known as “sex” is a procreative activity, meant primarily for the continuation of a species, human or other. So, as an academic theologian, I have to take the risk of saying that in terms of sex, most faith and belief traditions are unanimous: sex is for reproduction.

As a proponent of homoerotic gay spirituality, I do not use the term sex precisely for that reason, and for the sake of precision. If I were to use the acronym S.E.X., which I occasionally do, I clarify that it is (1) an acronym, (2) that it has nothing to do with animal reproduction, and (3) the acronym means Spiritual Energy Exchange!

The sex our Berlin masseur is referring to is nothing more than titillation, arousal, stimulation, resulting in ejaculation and orgasm. It’s nothing more than gratification, satisfaction of an animal urge.

Reading on, the masseur claims to have “trained” with some obscure school called Gay Love Spirit (!?!) It doesn’t take a genius to find Gay Love Spirit, a London-based erotic massage school. Nor does it take a genius to understand exactly what GLS offers. Here’s how they refer to a man’s search for a partner: “There are different ways to be a successful ‘hunter’.  Hunter? Hunted? Really, I don’t consider myself to be a hunted animal, someone’s prey. Nor do I consider the men I seek to be animals or prey nor do I view myself as a predator!

If that’s any indication of the Berlin masseur’s “training,” I have one thing to say: No! Thank you!

There are far too many sex workers masquerading as masseurs and receiving their training from similar organizations. What they succeed in doing is making money by misguiding unfortunate and lonely men. That’s predatory.

What’s even more outrageous is that they create a toxic stereotype and reinforce the already toxic cultural conditioning that poisons any teaching of the holiness of man-touching-man. I take personal, professional, and righteous offense when I read such rubbish because I have spent years and enormous time and treasure offering something different, something healing, something clean to my brothers!

The Berlin masseur is not alone in his predatory misinformation, and his mercenary pursuits. There are a number of such businesses appearing on Twitter and elsewhere on asocial media. What they claim to offer, as does the Berlin masseur is basically the same snake-oil chant, “helping gay men to have a spiritual life while also celebrating sexuality.” But they are not doing that! They are causing considerable damage and harm to vulnerable gay and bisexual men! By any standard, what they are doing is simply prostitution; they are simply sex workers.

Yes, “What would God think? What would God think, indeed!

Many of my readers are familiar with Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch, my system and program based on traditional Tantra (तन्त्र) and Yoga (योग), their science and philosophy. In Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch no one is proselytized and there’s no preaching about a god, a system, a philosophy, much less any religion. The program does not require anyone to believe in a god nor to abandon his own prior beliefs. The spirituality is unique and natural.

If we do discuss a god, that god is the Creator. That creator created All, including gay men and their sexuality. In keeping with traditional Sanātanadharma (सनातनधर्म) , the Creator is perfect, perfectly good, and as such could not create anything evil; that includes gay men and gay sexuality. That is, in fact mainstream Tantric spirituality and doctrine. In fact, in Hinduism, there is a parable that teaches the tṛtīyaprakṛti (तृतीयप्रकृति) or the “doctrine of the third nature,” beings who were human but did not identify with being exclusively male or exclusively female; the sages called this the tṛtīyaprakṛti (तृतीयप्रकृति), the “third nature.” The spiritual and mystical teaching is that everyone embodies a masculine and a feminine principle that function as complementaries in a healthy human being. The supreme deity, Shiva, is depicted as Ardhanārīśvara (अर्धनारीश्वर).—a form of Śiva, (half male and half female), and Hindu mythology teems with gender-bending gods and goddesses!

It is unclear which “god” the Berlin masseur is referring to but it is certainly not the god of Tantra (तन्त्र), much less the Supreme Being of Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch. Our “god” doesn’t waste its time “thinking” about whatever it is the Berlin masseur’s “god” has as a preoccupation. Perhaps the Berlin masseur’s god embodies the masseur’s own questions, biases, stereotypes, conditioning, etc. Historically, we find that humankind’s gods frequently embodied the people’s psychospiritual fears and their terrors.

That is not the case in Sanātanadharma (सनातनधर्म) or in Tantra (तन्त्र); our “gods” are tolerant, ethical, compassionate, blissful; that’s exactly what they think we should become.

So, “What would god think?” I have no idea, no possible answer to such a futile and useless question. I can only speak from study and experience: the god of Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch thinks we should embody the yama-s (यम) and niyama-s (नियम) principles, that we should be guided by the Kṣatriyadharma (क्षत्रियधर्म) and the truths of Sanātanadharma (सनातनधर्म) , that we should strive towards union with the Divine through all of the tools we have in our embodiedness, including the senses, the mind, and the movements of the soul. Anything else is suffering, an obstacle requiring healing.

Meditation, Contemplation, Reflection. What?

There’s no getting around the fact that meditation and reflection are integral to effective transformation in any program but even more important as components of the Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch system. You won’t get far if you’re not clear about who and what you are.

Meditation, Contemplation, Reflection…What?

There is frequently confusion among beginners, even among veteran “practitioners” about the difference between meditation and contemplation. And then I throw in “reflection” into the mix and all Armageddon breaks loose.

Again, the confusion lies in the fact that the West takes a tradition from the East and screws it up completely.

For example, the Roman Catholic Catechism defines meditation, confusing a number of practices in the definition,  in the following way:

“a prayerful quest engaging thought, imagination, emotion, and desire. Its goal is to make our own in faith the subject considered, by confronting it with the reality of our own life” (CCC 2723).

If it were possible to fit anything else in that one fragment, I would like to know how to do it. I have a professional degree in theology and divinity and I struggle with an interpretation. What would the lay practitioner do with it?

That’s not what we are doing when we meditate in the Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch disciplines.

Contemplation, on the other hand, is (attributed to St. Teresa of Avila) “nothing else than a close sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with him who we know loves us.” The Catechism reiterates this theme when it summarizes this type of prayer.

To use the Roman Catholic Catechism again, its definition of contemplation is:

Contemplative prayer is the simple expression of the mystery of prayer. It is a gaze of faith fixed on Jesus, an attentiveness to the Word of God, a silent love. It achieves real union with the prayer of Christ to the extent that it makes us share in his mystery. (CCC 2724)

Ditto (See my comment above).

Contemplation might best be summarized by the phrase, “I look at him and he looks at me,” a description of prayer that “a certain peasant of Ars used to say while praying before the tabernacle” (CCC 2715). “I look at him and he looks at me,” is a beautifully simple statement of holiness and relationship, one that we can certainly relate to in our homoerotic yogic Tantra (तन्त्र) spirituality practices, our sādhanā (साधना). But in homoerotic yogic Tantra, that would not be prayer; in fact, that might be what happens either in darśana (दर्शन) or in deep meditation.

Put simply, prayer is when you reach out to and talk to god; meditation is when you reach into yourself and listen for god. In Homoerotic Tantra we do both but our prayer is more general or takes the form of worship of the iṣṭadeva (इष्टदेव), the Beloved One; our meditation listens for the Divine within us, seeks union with god or a higher Awareness or Consciousness or Reality, however you’d like to describe it.

The Roman and Orthodox Catholic Churches have similar mystic traditions of meditation, contemplation, reflection, prayer, as do Islam and Judaism, but they differ substantially from those of the East, particularly Sanātanadharma (सनातनधर्म), although the West has adopted and adapted many of the traditional methods of the East.

In Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch we differentiate between prayer and meditation or contemplation; prayer being an outreaching discipline, while contemplation and meditation are inreaching disciplines. Reflection, on the other hand, is more of a cognitive mindwork ( manas (मनस्)), that is both inward and outward directed, but differs from meditation and contemplation in that it is dual: the reflector is one and the reflected is another. I would say that if I were to ask a number of men to describe their meditation or contemplation experience as spiritual, inspirational, or transcendent, as they crave those experiences just as many outside of Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch do, I would probably get a both/and response rather than an either/or. That’s fine but more on that later.

In our hybrid Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch practices, it will soon become apparent that, as in many of our practices and exercises in sādhana (साधन), these disciplines will initially tend to overlap and will diverge only after you have developed a higher skill level in focusing, centering, and controlling the mind. That’s not a big concern right now.

In the grip of what is being called a global pandemic, and confronted with lockdowns, quarantines, social distancing, we become inherently more spiritual and ask ourselves those pesky existential questions like: Who am I? What am I? Why am I here? Where am I headed? Without some sort of groundedness, the anxiety and uncertainty can be overwhelming, particularly if you are a gay or bisexual man. This situation makes Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch even more meaningful and significant in a man’s life and living.

With the start of the new 10-month program cycle on April 20, 2020, we will start using the new Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch program material, some of which has been revised but most of which has been substantially re-written, in order to better represent the interconnection of each of the topics.

I’d like to share with current followers and śiṣya (शिष्य)-s, and with gay and bisexual men who may be considering joining the Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch program, and becoming a śiṣya (शिष्य) some information and comments on the new material, and some changes to the overall program as you know it.

The “manual” is not a cover-to-cover “manual” as such. Each month a śiṣya (शिष्य)[1] (follower, disciple) receives one or more “inserts” for his personal manual. There are about 15 different chapters, each with several subchapters, ranging from creating your sacred space to rituals, with various erotic and sensory sādhana (साधन)[2] exercises in between. The program scheduling is such that I provide these inserts over the program cycle of about 10-12 months, one complete topic per month, to allow the śiṣya (शिष्य) to do the exercises as we move along. There are also optional topics such as aromatherapy and Sanskrit vocabulary with some language exercises as bonus topics. I do not provide the manual inserts before (1) the śiṣya (शिष्य) has established a meditation practice or at least a self-reflection practice, (2) the śiṣya (शिष्य) has completed the self-assessments (after becoming a patron).

The Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch program is basically two programs rolled into one: the Homoerotic Tantra system which is the essentially spiritual/ritual content, based on traditional Tantra (तन्त्र) and Yoga (योग) science and philosophy, and the Mascul-IN-Touch system, which teaches the male erotosensual methods and techniques practiced in a yogic tāntric framework. The unique program is complex and has taken some time and a lot of patience on my part and the original śiṣya (शिष्य), but the current version certainly makes it all worthwhile.

In the meantime, I would strongly recommend that any gay or bisexual man interested in participating either locally or online review the two advance documents (links below) that outline the specific program components and the supplementary (optional) or bonus components:

Starting with this new 10-month cycle, I will not be providing a complete paper copy manual up front for one important reason: men tend to just skip around to whatever turns them on without learning anything properly. By providing a programmed set of tutorials over the space of 10-12 months, I can reasonably be assured that the śiṣya is “doing his homework,” and establishing an all-important disciple. This practice also ensures that the śiṣya stays with the program because he will look forward to the next month’s topic(s) while practicing the current and past months.

I shall be in regular personal contact with śiṣya-s who are local, and with distance śiṣya-s by email and telephone with registered (patron) śiṣya-s starting in April 2020, when the revised materials will be going out and the new program cycle is scheduled to begin. Each registered (patron) śiṣya-s will receive a regular day and time for conferences.

It is my practice in order to keep costs at a minimum for us all to provide the manual inserts in PDF format by email. That seems to be very convenient for everyone because śiṣya-s then have the inserts conveniently on their computers, laptops, tablets, etc. and can refer to them conveniently at any time. If, in the odd circumstance, the śiṣya should need to print out a copy, he can request an unlocked copy of the insert from me.

The reason that the PDFs provided as manual “inserts” are locked and can be viewed only (and not edited or printed out) is because the techniques and methods are “secret” and should not be disclosed to a non-śiṣya. This is important in terms of keeping the program and the methods clean and undiluted.

[1] Śiṣya (शिष्य) is the Sanskrit term we use in Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch for a patron follower or a disciple, that is, a man who is formally following the program. Śiṣya is pronounced shis-sya.

[2] Sādhana (साधन) is our general term for a spiritual practice. Sādhana (साधन) is part of a śiṣya’s regular abhyāsa (अभ्याश) or disciplined practice. Sādhana (साधन) is pronounced sádh-āna (आन); abhyāśa (अभ्याश) is pronounced abhuh-yáh-suh. dh and bh are prounounced like a d and a b but with a slight puff of air.

The Science: Pornography is Bad for You!


I am not making a moral judgment when I teach that there is no good nor benefit to pornography nor am I stating that if you tell me that you like pornography that you are a bad person. That’s not the point. But I do find it deeply troubling when a grown man of average or higher intelligence tells me that he needs pornography! That is symptomatic of a disordered and pathological situation. That is not my conclusion but the conclusion of more than 40 years of scientific research.

That being said, it pornography and its harmful effects continue to be controversial, not because of the absence of good scientific evidence, but because of ignorance, economic interests, denial, and of course, individual rights and freedoms.

The man, who claims that in these times of pandemic, isolation, quarantine, social-distancing, he needs pornography to cope, is either a fool or already an addict. I would particularly condemn any tāntric or yogic practitioner who would make the claim that pornography has positive benefits; that man is a fraud.

Authentic Tantra (तन्त्र) does not teach pornography; Authentic Yoga (योग) does not teach promiscuity. Neither Tantra (तन्त्र) nor Yoga (योग) teach massage, erotic, gay, or sensuous, or whatever. Any man offering such a teaching is a false teacher.

What Yoga (योग) and Tantra (तन्त्र) do teach is the concept of brahmacarya (ब्रह्मचर्य), which is the personal ethical principle of restraint, conservation of one’s vital energies.

There is a difference between pornography and obscenity.

If we are to discuss pornography, we must first define the term as it is understood by the researchers I will be citing. The English term “pornography” has its origin in the ancient Greek words “porno” and “graphia” meaning “depictions of the activities of whores or prostitutes.” As we tend to use it today, it usually means “material that is sexually explicit and intended primarily for the purpose of sexual arousal.”

In the United States, the term “obscenity” is a legal term which was defined by the U.S. Supreme Court in its 1973 Miller v. California decision; according to that decision, for something to be found obscene, and hence not protected by the First Amendment, a competent judge or a jury representative of the community at large must determine that the material:

  • taken as a whole and in its context, appeals to a prurient (sick, morbid, shameful, or lascivious) interest in sex;
  • depicts sexual conduct in a openly and conspicuously offensive manner (i.e.. goes beyond contemporary community standards with regard to depictions of sexual content or activity);
  • taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, and scientific value.

The concerned material must meet all three criteria before it can be found to be obscene in under the law, and its dissemination prohibited. The significance of this distinction is important, since it means that a given material may be regarded as “pornographic” but still fail to qualify as “obscene.” Common examples might include explicit sex film produced for use in medical education about human sexuality, or a film or book with serious artistic or literary value, which may include some explicit content.

That is the law at work in the United States; the Supreme Court has thus protected a wide variety of sexual material in a wide variety of formats and from being provided to adults — the legal standard is much higher concerning the intentional exposure of minors to such material. Under the Miller test, however, dissemination of pornographic material which is also obscene, such as most of what has been called “hardcore porn,” is prohibited and legal penalties may be imposed.

I am going to limit my discussion to pornography’s effects on adults, with a brief commentary on exposure of minors. Adults are generally considered human beings older than 18 years, but adult is no indication of maturity nor is it any indicator of intelligence or rationality. Being an adult means reaching a certain standard of chronology and biological development, and may imply some level of social and psychological development, but that is subject to a wide range of opinion.

I am also going to limit my discussion to landmark studies and data from clinical and case studies, that is, a very cursory but illuminating review of the scientific literature dealing with the effects of pornography. The information comes primarily from:

  • clinical case history data
  • field studies
  • experimental  laboratory type studies.

There is also a great deal of anecdotal data that could be provided by professional healthcare professionals, clergy, law enforcement, and support organizations but I do not intend to include that sort of material because it tends to be somewhat biased and unscientific.

Overall, I found an array of four-factor common to nearly all of the individuals in their involvement with pornography. There were almost no exceptions. Those factors are:

      1. Addiction
      2. Escalation
      3. Desensitization
      4. Acting-out.


In addition, the user of the pornographic material gets hooked. Once hooked, he keeps coming back for more. There’s a very powerful stimulant effect, almost an aphrodisiac, which is followed by the “happy end” or release, mostly by masturbation.

The effect doesn’t stop there, because the user keeps craving more and more, and he frequently includes the imagery in his fantasies even when not viewing the actual material.

As in any addiction, the user cannot escape his dependence by himself, and he suffers a great many negative consequences.

According to one law-enforcement professional: “Many people have testified as to their extreme addiction to the material in terms of having their whole lives consumed by it: sitting for hours masturbating to adult material and needing progressively stronger, heavier, harder material to give them a bigger kick. Like an alcoholic or a drug addict they are looking for that big kick and they need more just to keep them at that level of feeling’ OK.’”


The next level in the downward spiral is the escalation phase.

Over time, he requires rougher, more explicit, more deviant, and “kinky” kinds of sexual material to get aroused, a situation comparable to substance addiction. Over time, the user demands more and more of the stimulant to get an equivalent effect.

If the man is in a relationship, he may try to get his partner involved in his habit, which may result in conflict and even failure of the relationship.

Being in a relationship with an intimate partner does not solve the problem because the escalation is due to the addiction to the sexual imagery from the exposure to the pornography. In fact, the user prefers the pornographic imagery together with masturbation more than actual personal intimacy with his partner!

This situation nearly always:

      • reduces their capacity to show affection in intimate relations
      • diminishes their capacity to love and express affection to their partner in their intimate relations
      • the user’s sex drive is diverted from his partner to the pornography
      • the user’s partner feels alienated, lonely, and rejected.

The user frequently prefers to masturbate to pornography rather than to be fully engaged in intimacy with a flesh-and-blood partner.


Desensitization occurs when the user finds the pornographic material, which previously was considered immoral, shocking, offensive, illegal, or repulsive, to be acceptable or even normal. In other words, he legitimizes the once antisocial or deviant material, and convinces himself that “everyone does it; it must be OK.” He thus rationalizes his behavior and gives himself permission to continue it.

Acting Out a New Sexuality

When an individual is exposed to pornography over time, and has passed through the stages of addiction, escalation, and desensitization, he enters the fourth phase: acting out his newly learned behaviors. This fourth phase may include compulsive promiscuity, exhibitionism, voyeurism, group sex activities, erotic massage, and sadomasochistic behavior during sex.

The user gradually grew into a sexual addiction situation and he finds himself locked in, unable to change, regardless of the negative consequences in his life. Reality and fantasy has become blurred for him as he acts out his pathological sexual fantasies.

The most frequent consequences of being exposed to and enslaved by pornography is not the probability or possibility of committing a serious sex crime (though this can and does occur), but rather its destruction of the fragile bonds of intimacy and relationships; this is where the most pain, disruption, and suffering occurs. There is interference with or even annihilation of the ability to show warmth and affection and to establish respectful, loving, and healthy intimacy in relationships, or to establish bonds with long-term partners. This is only the “tip of the iceberg.”

Depending on the individual — and there is wide variation among those affected —, there can be an almost instant addiction, while with others the addiction process may take a much longer exposure. One fact is certain: the problem is like a cancer; it almost never disappears on its own or reverses its course unless there is some intervention.

Pornography’s Effect on a Man’s Psychosexual Development

Researchers report symptoms of arrested development in the psycho sexual growth of the pornography users they study.

A psychiatrist on the faculty of the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry in Topeka, Kansas, views pornography as a product that typically depicts unusual types of sex, degradation through sex, violent sex, and promiscuous, meaningless sex –all of which are indications of incomplete and abnormal human development; he notes that healthy mature men do not behave in these ways. He sees these men as developing a kind of addiction for pornography after having  exposures to it over time. The pornographic stimuli promote regressive behavior rather than mature behavior.

He also views exposure to pornography as especially damaging to young men who are on the threshold of entering into an active sexual life. For them these vital processes should be guided toward greater maturity and healthy socialization, not retrogressively toward perversion or wanton, meaningless sex. As he states, “Society and individuals alike can only be harmed when we legitimize abnormal behavior.”

Add to the list of dire consequences: the fact that some men become dissatisfied with their partners, whom they consider to be inadequate after viewing the exaggerated sexual prowess depicted in pornography.

Pornography Conditions a Man to be Deviant

The work of R.L. McGuire, author of a study, “Sexual Deviations as Conditioned Behavior: A Hypothesis, ” suggests that exposure to special sexual experiences, such as that provided in pornography, and then masturbating to his fantasies, condition a man to a deviant sexuality.

If you don’t think that exposure to pornography has a conditioning effect, you should review the considerable literature on therapy for sexual problems that use selective explicit sex presentations as therapeutic tools. If the therapies and the data from them are valid, then we must also allow for the possibility that intentional exposure to pornography or deviant real life sex experiences can also facilitate the conditioning of men into sexual aberrations.

Psychologist Patrick Carnes (currently the leading U.S. researcher on sexual addictions) has published a series of research and data-based books, bringing to national awareness the problem of out-of-control, compulsive sexual behavior. Rather ironically, Dr. Carnes also found that many therapists (healthcare professionals, psychiatrists, therapists, and social workers) suffer from sexual addictions and inappropriate “acting out” sexual behavior.

As he put it, “One of the discoveries that emerged from our survey is that [individuals] seeking help are often sexually abused by their therapists.” This suggests that compulsive sexual behavior is a problem even for practitioners in the therapeutic community. Do we see this development in the erotic, gay, tāntric massage community as well?

Would there be any reason to suppose that the sacred sex guru-s and practitioners, and the body electric practitioners would be immune to these deviant behaviors?

All Sex Deviations Appear To Be Learned Behaviors

The best evidence to date suggests that most or all sexual behavior is learned behavior, usually through conditioning.

As a man repeatedly masturbates to a vivid sexual fantasy as his preferred or exclusive outlet (whether based on a real life experience or pornography), the pleasurable experiences give the fantasy increasing erotic value. The resulting orgasm experienced by his masturbation provides a critical reinforcement for the conditioning of the fantasy. Any type of sexual learning can be acquired in this way.

Related studies support this thesis. They found that masturbation fantasies very significantly affected the habit strength of a man’s sexual behavior. Most men are vulnerable to the effects of conditioning resulting from masturbation to pornography, and the result can be sexual disorders, because we are all susceptible to learning by experience and conditioning.

Sexual therapists report that any man who regularly masturbates to pornography is at risk of becoming, over time, a sexual addict, as well as running the risk conditioning him into having a sexual deviancy, failing to establish bonded relationships, or harming his intimacy with a partner. Other frequent side effects include:

      • a dramatically reduction in a man’s capacity to love
      • a marked dissociation of sex from friendship, affection, caring, and other normal healthy emotions
      • appearance of traits that hinder the establishment of relationships
      • his sexual aspect becomes in a sense dehumanized
      • possible development of an “alien ego state” (or dark side), or antisocial lust devoid of most values
      • the “high” obtained from masturbating to pornography becomes more important than real life relationships
      • repeatedly masturbating to deviant pornographic imagery risks development of sexual addictions or other sexual pathology.

It makes no difference if the man is a physician, attorney, minister, athlete, corporate executive college president, unskilled laborer, or an average 15-year-old boy. Anyone can be conditioned to become a sexual deviant.

The negative outcomes of masturbatory conditioning are unavoidable and do not cure themselves. The course of this disorder may be slow and is nearly always concealed by the man; it is frequently a secret part of the man’s life. Denial by the male and refusal to confront the problem are typical and predictable, and this almost always leads to relationship and interpersonal disharmony, and sometimes failure of intimate relationships.

Imprinting the Brain with Sexual Images

Psychologist James L. McGaugh at the University of California, Irvine, published findings that suggest that memories of experiences, which occurred at times of emotional arousal (including sexual arousal), get “locked into the brain” by hormones, and are difficult to erase. This may partly explain pornography’s addicting effect.

Powerful sexually arousing memories of experiences from the past keep intruding themselves back on the mind’s memory screen, serving to stimulate and erotically arouse the viewer. If he masturbates to these fantasies, he reinforces tile linkage between sexual arousal and orgasm, with the particular scene or image repeatedly rehearsed in his mind.

One might quickly see the risks involved with large numbers of males being exposed to the pornographic material and masturbating. When that material is what is usually called hardcore pornography, and available on the Internet, this is exactly the kind of pornographic stimulus that the male viewer can replay again and again for his sexual gratification.

If the research of investigators in the area of human learning has any meaning at all, it would suggest that such pornography could be hazardous. It could potentially condition some male viewers into having reoccurring sexual fantasies (vividly imprinted into the brain), to which they may repeatedly masturbate to and then, later, be tempted to act out as sexual behaviors.
What about the research on aggressive pornography (porn-violence)? Good question.

Many pornographic films are also broadcast unedited on the Internet, and the typical film shows nude men in sexually arousing situations and postures, engaging in oral, anal sex, or abused is some way or another.

The results of this research suggest the possibility of conditioning viewers into associating sexual arousal with inflicting abuse, violence, injury, humiliation, etc. on other men. These scenes can be repeatedly viewed in privacy, and masturbated to, with the associated risks of negative or antisocial conditioning and behavior, previously noted.

Researchers Neil Malamuth and Edward Donnerstein noted in their book, “Pornography and Sexual Aggression” that “Certain forms of pornography (aggressive) can affect aggressive attitudes toward [men] and can desensitize an individual’s perception of [violence]. These attitudes and perceptions are, furthermore, directly related to actual aggressive behavior against [men]. … These results suggest, again, that aggressive pornography does increase aggression ….” These authors conclude, “There can be relatively long-term, antisocial effects of movies that portray sexual violence as having positive consequences.”

The literature on aggressive pornography is rather impressive in its consistency in suggesting a variety of harms or possibility of antisocial outcomes from exposure to this material. This should not be surprising after 40 years of research on film and TV violence arriving essentially at the same conclusion.

And what about the effects of non-violent pornography?
The issue which has caught the attention of some behavioral scientists doing work in this area is whether it is the violence or the sex that is doing most of the “harm” when it is fused together in so-called aggressive pornography or porno-violence. Some will say, “Just eliminate the violence–the sex is OK.”

If we look at non-violent pornography which is totally devoid of violence, we may ask, what about its effects? First, we might indicate several examples of non-violent pornography which most therapists, as well as most ordinary citizens, would not regard as healthy models of sexual behavior:

      • Child pornography
      • Incest type porn (e.g., father seducing son, son seducing father, older brother seducing younger brother, etc.)
      • Sex with animals
      • Group sex
      • Sex which humiliates and denigrates men and their sex role in man-man relationships (viewed without overt violence)
      • Obscene films which present a massive amount of misinformation or gross distortions about human sexuality.

All of the above, while lacking violence, still have the potential of having negative effects on some viewers because they model unhealthy sex role behavior, or give false information about human sexuality. Additionally, nonviolent porn can contribute to acquiring a great variety of sexual addictions.

Additionally, there is empirical research available on the effects of “adult” non-violent pornography. This research suggests that when experimental subjects are exposed to repeated presentations of hardcore non-violent adult pornography over a six-week period, they:

      • develop an increased callousness towards sex partners;
      • trivialize violence as a criminal offense; to some it was becomes no longer a crime at all;
      • develop distorted, perceptions about sexuality;
      • develop an appetite for more deviant, bizarre or violent types of pornography (escalation); normal sex no longer seemed to “do the job;”
      • devalue the importance of monogamy and lack confidence in relationship as either a viable or lasting option, and
      • view non-monogamous, casual relationships, and promiscuity as normal and natural behavior.

Pornography’s Effect on Sexual Satisfaction and Personal Values

In further research on prolonged consumption of nonviolent pornography, subjects, after several weeks’ exposure to non-violent pornography, reported less satisfaction with their partner’s sexual performance, affection, and physical appearance.

The researchers also found an incompatibility of the sexual values in pornography and the sexual values implicit in enduring intimate relationships, and, in particular, in committed relationships. The chief proclamation of pornography is great sexual joy without any attachment, commitment or responsibility.

Exposure to pornography also lowered their evaluation of committed relationship, making the institution of marriage appear less significant and less viable in the future.

The authors saw these attitudes as reflecting the deranged pornographic projection of carefree and consequence-free, promiscuous sexuality. This would suggest that pornography erodes personal values and the institution of marriage itself.

Additionally, it was found that exposure to non-aggressive pornography changed the attitudes and feelings of adult subjects in the direction of making sexual improprieties and transgressions seem less bad. The victims of such transgressions were also perceived to suffer less and be less severely wronged. In other words, as a result of exposure to pornography, they had become to some degree desensitized to the breaking of sexual taboos.

As Dr. Jennings Bryant comments, “If the values which permeate the content of most hardcore pornography are examined, what is found is an almost total suspension of the sorts of moral judgment that have been espoused in the value systems of most civilized cultures. Forget trust. Forget family. Forget relationship. Forget love. Forget commitment. Here, in this world of ultimate physical hedonism, anything goes.”

“If we take seriously the social science research literature in areas such as social learning or cultivation effects, we should expect that the heavy consumer of hardcore pornography should acquire some of these values which are so markedly different from those of our mainstream society, especially if the consumer does not have a well developed value system of his or her own.”

People Are Affected by What They See and Hear

However, for someone to suggest that pornography cannot have an effect on you (including a harmful one) is to deny the whole notion of education, generally, or to suggest that people are not affected by what they read and see. If you believe that a pornographic book or film cannot affect you, then you must also say that Karl Marx’s Das Kapital, the Bible, the Koran or advertising have no effect on their readers or viewers. But, of course, books and other media do have an effect on their consumers.

Additionally, astute businessmen would not spend billions of dollars a year on television advertising if their visual/verbal messages and imagery did not motivate people to buy deodorant, Volkswagens, iPods, or Pampers. Therefore, the key question is, not whether, but what kind of an effect does pornography have?

Use of sexually explicit films are used to change sexual behavior and attitudes in hundreds of sex counseling clinics in the United States daily that make use of explicit sexual pictures, films, books, and videos to change couples’ sexual behavior, beliefs, and attitudes. Other centers use graphic sex films in an attempt to recondition the sexual behavior of sex offenders.

You cannot logically argue that the kind of change which takes place in a sex counseling clinic can function only one way (just to make people healthy). The possibility certainly exists that some pornography can harm people through accidental conditioning processes or modeling and imitative learning of destructive, unhealthy, or illegal kinds of sexual activity, which some viewers may later act out. This could be especially true for more impressionable, immature, and vulnerable children and adolescents.

Pornography As A Form of Sex [Mis]Education

Consider also the spread of sex education courses through schools in the United States and in other countries. The assumption is that you can change attitudes and behavior about sex through some form of teaching and instruction. If you assume that this is so (still a controversial issue with some researchers), then you have to admit to the possibility that films, magazines, and books which model loveless sex, abuse, misuse, and the dehumanization of men in sexual scenes – pornography — are also powerful forms of sex education. This latter type of material educates, but not in healthy ways.

Anyone who has seen much pornography knows that most of it is made by men for male consumption; is extremely sexist; gives a great deal of misinformation about human sexuality-, is devoid of love, relationship, responsibility; mentions nothing about the risks of sexually transmitted diseases, and for the most part, dehumanizes both male and female participants.

Pornography falsely represents sex, and some of it is very hostile to females who are often denigrated and humiliated. If you were to regard pornography as a form of sex education, you would have to label most of it as miseducation because it presents and models scientifically inaccurate, false and misleading information about human sexuality, especially female sexual nature and response.

In addition, pornography portrays “unhealthy” or even antisocial kinds of sexual expression such as sadomasochism, abuse and humiliation of one of the participants. It may imply involvement of minors, incest, group sex, voyeurism, exhibitionism, bestiality, etc. Thus, if we examine just its educative impact, it presents us with some very serious grounds for concern.

Why Some Claim ‘No Effects’

Some of the educated commentators or even “experts” that I know who publicly suggest that pornography has no effects are just simply unaware of the new research/studies suggesting harm. There are others who really do not believe what they are asserting. And, there are still others who will only reluctantly admit to the possibility of harm from just “violent pornography.” Still others will claim no harm because they’re making big money on porn or porn-related services, or the services benefiting from a man’s addiction to porn.

In some cases, they are pretending “not to know” because of their concern over what they falsely believe is censorship or loss of First Amendment rights. Some fear the tyranny of a moralist minority who might take away their rights to view and use pornography, then later maybe free speech and expression. And, some are themselves sex addicts with a hidden agenda behind their public posturing. Thus, for some of them, the issue is political. It also has to do with their personal values and much less with what any contrary evidence might suggest.

Some of the tobacco institute scientists are still claiming there is no proof of harm from smoking despite 30 years of carefully researched evidence to the contrary and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of victims.

Research Methodology

The average reader is unfamiliar with the complexities of medical and behavioral science, and scientific research methodology, so I should mention an important issue which has to do with whether two things being studied are in some or any way related (“correlated” with each other) or whether one causes or results in the other to happening (a “cause-effect” or “causal” relationship). You can have a correlation without a cause-effect relationship, which confuses many people, and even researchers come to grief over this issue.

Correlation alone never demonstrates or proves a causal relationship, though it can be suggestive or raise that possibility.

For example, if the sun rises each morning and a person is consistently hungry at that time, the relationship is correlation; the events are related events but the one is not causing the other to happen. On the other hand, the sun rising in the morning and the outdoor temperature increasing are correlated in a causal way. Thus, a number of studies suggest a relationship (correlation) between early exposure to pornography and later sexual promiscuity and deviancy. Pornography could be one cause of promiscuity, for example.

Take another example: if a man associates with individuals interested or practicing bizarre sexual behaviors, his choice of company or activities could be a factor contributing to an interest in pornography as well as to participation in dangerous or promiscuous sexual activities.

For example, almost all of the evidence linking drunk driving with high accident rates and deaths is correlational and anecdotal. Despite this, nearly all of us would agree that there is very likely a cause-effect relationship between alcohol and fatal accidents. Laws and public policy decisions have been made on the basis of this correlation, and many lives have been saved. I am not aware of any scientists who are critical of this interpretation of the data and evidence, even though it is only “correlational.”

Frequently, good judgment, correct inference, and sound logic have to be used-along with the scientific data to make reasonable judgments about risk of harm. Everyone has to make daily decisions, without conclusive knowledge as to whether or not to continue smoking or eating unhealthy foods, and, similarly, whether or not to expose himself or his partner to pornographic materials or their effects.

Because ethical scientific research prohibits doing harm to research subjects, we may never have “direct” evidence or proof of a cause-effect relationship; consequently, we will continue, as in the past, to make personal, community, social policy decisions and laws on the basis of the best evidence available, good common sense, and the available scientific data, including that out of the laboratory of our everyday experience, in handling pornography, carcinogens in our environment, job and sex discrimination, and a number of other matters.

We need not claim that we are paralyzed or immobilized or unable to make decisions just because you choose to deny the evidence, question the scientific data, or simply are already addicted. Some men live in perpetual darkness and deny reality some out of a self-destructive tendency, all out of ignorance. While cigarette manufacturers are still claiming that there is no conclusive evidence of a causal connection between smoking and lung cancer many pulmonary and respiratory diseases, millions of Americans have chosen to stop smoking based on the evidence.

This raises the question of Why so many gay and bisexual men practice unsafe sex given the evidence and the history of AIDS? One answer may be in the professional and amateur pornography they expose themselves to online, much of which promotes unsafe sex!

A final note…

I have to emphasize that I cannot claim to have covered all relevant approaches to the problem of such a vast and variegated entity as pornography. It has been impossible to review any more than a few representative studies, and to summarize some of the current trends as well as past research on pornography’s effects, focusing especially on the negative findings, given that there are no positive findings on the issue.

Even if my review of the research and other evidence should still be considered by some to be insufficient to give the reader a sense of the field and, thus, answer for himself or herself the question of pornography’s potential to change or influence sexual attitudes and behavior in adults as well as children, I feel the vast majority of readers will necessarily come to the conclusion that pornography is very, very bad.

Regardless of what evidence is offered, there will still be many men who will argue that immersing himself in pornography is devoid of any negative consequences. But, that perhaps reflects their refusal to examine their own behavior, their unfamiliarity with the literature and research, perhaps they may have had a very [un]protected life experience, or they may be so addicted and helpless, they cannot accept the facts.

In the published scientific studies, we find reports of both children and adults who have been unequivocally and repeatedly injured by exposure to pornography, where the accumulated evidence over the many years of published research demonstrates a cause-effect relationship between such exposure to pornography and a wide range of harmful outcomes.

If anyone who reviews this report still has doubts about pornography’s effects, I would suggest that he or she attend some meetings of “Sexaholics Anonymous” or “Sex Addicts Anonymous”  and personally witness the pain, trauma, and evidence first hand. Most members of these groups, when they share their stories, will point to pornography as a significant facilitator of their compulsive, out-of-control sexual behavior.

There are certainly risks and there seems little doubt that there are at least some people, even those who are initially healthy, who will be eventually harmed through exposure to pornography.

In a culture and society where some types of pornographic material are protected by the Constitution, and where obscenity laws often go unenforced, some individuals may choose to immerse themselves pornography, just as some people may choose to drink or smoke excessively, or use illegal drugs. These individuals should be made aware of the health hazards involved and should have a sufficient understanding of the many risks involved.

This article draws on the work of many recognized authorities on the subject of pornography and behavior, and pornography and health risks. I am deeply indebted to Dr Victor B. Cline, a clinical psychologist who has treated hundreds of men with sexual dysfunction, and who has published numerous articles on the subject of pornography.

Every time I hear or read someone using Tantra and pornography in the same breath, I know at once that I’m dealing with a very confused and ignorant individual; there is nothing in Tantra that is or supports pornography. Nothing.

A Recent Idiotic Post on Twitter Recommending Pornography!

It’s very important to understand that sex is probably one of the most natural and essential activities of any higher organism. Why? Because sex is a biological activity whose sole purpose is reproduction, survival of the species. Sex is not recreation. Nor is sex something that happens in the case of homoerotic sensuality. Why? Because men do not reproduce offspring when they unite in Divine Union, maithuna (मैथुन). So let’s just put “sex” aside where it belongs.

Species that engage in genital stimulation simply for pleasure or for profit or for de-stressing are extremely rare. Off the top of my head I can think of only two: bonobo chimpanzees and human beings. Pornography as a form of self-expression or for profit is a recent phenomenon. In fact, The modern history of Western pornography begins with the Enlightenment (18th century), when printing technology had advanced enough to permit the production of written and visual materials to appeal to audiences of all socioeconomic levels and sexual tastes. Before that, there was no pornography as we know it today.

The term pornography originally meant “writing about prostitutes.” It was only in the 19th century that it came to mean, by some bizarre extension, the depiction of even non-erotosensuous subject matter such that its purpose is to elicit feelings of erotic pleasure; any such depiction.The graphic, detailed, often gratuitous depiction of something explicitly erotosensuous or sexual, any explicit or gratuitous display of material of an erotic or sexual nature for the purpose of arousal or stimulation. That is not to say that sexually graphic images or texts were not available in the ancient world, in both the East and the West, but that the depictions were not intended for the sole purpose of exhibitionism, voyeurism, narcissism, or titillation.

Pornography became interesting only when it became dangerous, and that may have started with the Abrahamic traditions (Judaism-Christianity-Islam), which in their popular forms taught that the body was sinful, and sex was laden with guilt and shame. Most ancient traditions worshiped the body and made eros a gateway to higher spirituality. It was the Protestant Reformation and Puritan sects that outlawed the body, its functions, even in the arts.

Furthermore, the gratuitous and explicit depiction of human erotic or sexual activity for “entertainment” purposes got its shot-in-the-arm only as late as the early 1950s when Kinsey published his book, and later by Masters and Johnson, the first actual open discussions of male and female sexual functions, or should I say dysfunction.

Given the fact that what we call pornography today includes not only the depiction but also the reception (the consumers), the purpose, the medium (distribution path), and the outcomes (the effects) differs radically from any explicit depictions in the western world, particularly in the period before the Age of Enlightenment or in the Classical or pre-Classical periods. It is the common error or historical ignorance and anachronism to attempt to rationalize acceptance of modern pornography and justify it by referring to ancient examples.

When I argue against pornography in the context of traditional Tantra (तन्त्र) or Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch, one of the most common responses is: Well, how do you explain the Kāmasūtra (कामसूत्र) or the sexual rituals described in the Indic sacred scriptures or the Tantras? The explanation is very simple: The temple sculptures and the classical Kāmasūtra (कामसूत्र) were and continue to be expressions of a highly developed culture, a culture that thought in non-dualistic terms, was amoral as the result of non-duality, and did not describe things as being good or bad but things that simply were. The ancient and later writings describe the sculptures as expressions of cosmology.

The classical Kāmasūtra (कामसूत्र), apart from two or three chapters, discusses how the cultured man or woman should behave in a relationship; erotic expression and sensuality was part of the relationship, not projected as the be-all-and-end-all of the relationship, nor as wanton sensuality!

As in the Tantras, the sacred texts, and in Tantra (तन्त्र), the science and philosophy, eroticism and sensuality played a very specific but minor role in the bigger picture, and was limited to adepts; in other words, it was not one big Gay Men Orgy! In fact, the erotic sensuality of Tantra was highly ritualized and there was little or no attraction between the partners, because that would distract from the focus and centeredness on the mystical experience.

Tantra does not teach massage techniques; the only legit (as in authentic & traditional) form of massage in India is ayurvedic. The emphasis of massage is on the herbal ‘oils’ that are used & the various ‘pressure’ points and manipulations done on the human anatomy for very specific purposes,none of them for the so-called “happy end” or “total release,” as in the phony “tantric” or erotic massage business in the West.

Tantra (तन्त्र) as promoted and sold in the West is a confused misinterpretation of Tantra (तन्त्र) as described in the sacred scriptures of Sanātanadharma (सनातनधर्म) and practiced in India or by authentic practitioners of ayurvedic, not tantric, massage. There is no connection between an authentic and good faith Tāntric practitioner and anything to do with selling gay massage, erotic massage, sacred sexuality, or body electric. Nothing!

There is absolutely no connection between Tantra (तन्त्र) and pornography as marketed, packaged, and sold or offered free today. Tantra (तन्त्र) is a science and a philosophy whose sole objective is awareness, awakening, well-being, spiritual health, enlightenment, and transformation. It is the polar opposite of pornography. how to spot a fake guru The fact that some phonies calling themselves tāntric masseurs or tāntric teachers use Tantra to give their product some exotic flavor or to legitimize their claims of exotic ecstasy and bliss must be interpreted as the chant of the snake-oil salesmen.

What’s even worse is when they hijack the term Tantra and use it as part of their name; that’s not only silly, it’s arrogant, and it’s fake.

In ancient civilizations in the West, in Greece and Rome, for example, pornography was practically unknown; the depictions that have come down to us are either (1) religious in nature, (2) philosophical, in terms of art and beauty, (3) symbolic, (4) promotional. I won’t go into these at this time but suggest you google “pornography history,” if you are interested.

Getting back to the so-called masseurs and pundits who explicitly preach that pornography is good, I would begin by saying that they are 200% unprofessional, ignorant, unqualified, and irresponsible. Why?

Because psychological and medical scientific research has shown it to be a disordered behavior with addictive and harmful effects. I am not being judgmental at all. Nor will I call upon religious teachings or moral teachings to substantiate my statement. Instead, I shall turn to modern medical science for my support.

GTB is not the only one to have expressed explicit public support of pornography. A well-known entrepreneur, JT of a neotantric organization catering for gay men, has even produced a video in which he extols the “benefits” of pornography; pornography is good; that it’s healthy.

There are others, too, but now I’m going to set the record straight: pornography is harmful, unhealthy, and serves no useful purpose. It’s in the medical and psychiatric scientific literature as an addiction disorder.

As professionals, we have a social and moral duty not to overstep our credentials and training, and not to misuse our positions to wrongfully promote our activities and to misinform the pubic. When a masseur advocates pornography as being healthy, he is overstepping his qualifications and expressing his personal opinion, not a professional opinion, much less an educated and informed opinion. When any professional even hints at an individual’s choice to expose himself to risk of disease or even death simply to ensure the success or survival of his business activity, that’s criminal.

If we are to believe the statements made by international and national public health authorities that we are in the grip of a serious pandemic; if we are to believe the media reports of deaths, shutdowns, lock-downs, quarantine, social distancing; if we are to believe that people are at risk of contagion and infection if they disregard the guidelines of the public health authorities, how can we pardon the irresponsible and outrageous statements made by practitioners selling tāntric massage or erotic massage? They should be tarred and feathered! Anyone accepting their invitations should be incarcerated! One publication put out by ToL [(name redacted] a business offering gay tāntric massage in London, UK, reads something like this, content edited for space):

“The UK government’s advice is contradictory…

“On the one hand, we are not to go out. On the other, we still have to pay our bills. There’s very limited financial support and the Bank of England has cut its interest rates because it wants people to spend money and thus stimulate the economy. So, the question is – how do we pay our rent without working, and how do we spend money without going out?

“At ToL [redacted], our view is that unless we get clearer instructions, it’s down to each person to make the necessary judgement call. We’ve also been in touch with colleagues around the world to try and ensure that we’re following a similar approach. Are erotic gay massages still an option during a time of social distancing? Ultimately, it’s down to both the masseur and the client to make that decision.

“Is ToL still offering massage services during the shut-down?

“We are. Masseurs are freelancers and it’s down to each of them to decide when they stop working (and when they start again).”

So, there you have it! Public health is an individual choice. The public health and government authorities of the United Kingdom have not clearly stated their guidelines. A bunch of gay masseurs, with all of perhaps 2 or so years of massage training know better. Why? Because they stand to lose money. So forget the pandemic, guys! Forget the risk to you and your loved ones! Forget the recommendations on how to avoid or prevent infection! Forget the value of social-distancing! Why? Because a couple of small businesses need the money! Look, even forgetting about tāntric considerations for a moment, I think we can all agree that most massage is intended to be therapeutic, that is, it’s intended to relax, de-stress, and in some cases to relieve physical problems and rehabilitate. Right? So, given the world public health situation, don’t we have a serious contradiction in what these guys are saying, preaching, doing? fake guru What’s more disturbing is the fact that some of these phonies talk an awful lot about love and support. They tend to include meditation and teaching in their tāntric programs. But, again, I have to make a conscientious statement that if they are actually qualified and trained to teach anything tāntric, that is, in the tradition of Yoga (योग) and Tantra (तन्त्र) as systems, wouldn’t you think that they would be familiar with the ethical principle of personal and social conduct? I’m referring to the yama (यम) and niyama (नियम) principles of Yoga (योग). The first and primal principal is ahiṃsā (अहिंसा) non-injury or harmlessness. Another is satya (सत्य) or truthfulness and integrity, and a third is śauca (सौच), personal hygiene and cleanliness, purity. Seems like they’re violating at least those! And if one of the better known pundits, JT, again a Brit practicing neotantra and offering what he claims to be diploma courses, training, workshops, international events, and who talks — and that’s about the extent of it — about love, support, enlightenment, bliss, ecstasy, etc. based on Guess what? Tantra (तन्त्र)! But what are we to think when he publishes statements containing language like:

“As we – [organizers’ names redacted] – sit here in our home, we have to tell you that we have seen our beautiful Tantra community, our vocation, our Tantric spiritual practice, our family, our friends, our business all deeply affected by this crisis on so many levels. We are in pain and distress, on one level. Our sleep is disrupted. We are at times scared and worried, and in these moments we lose our connection and risk falling into a state of depression.”

Doesn’t seem like these false gurus are teaching an effective technique for de-stressing, does it? If they can’t control their own anxiety, how in hell are they going to teach paying customers how to do so?

And in another so-called “Update on COVID-19″:

“We have spent 15 years building [organization name redacted] with every ounce of effort, love and dedication that we have. Now, we are looking at the possible disintegration of all of that. We are realising that this crisis could possibly mean the bankruptcy and end of [organization name redacted], and thus the end of our community. We are not taking this lying down … It’s from that place of Love and vision that you have our total promise that we will do our utmost to keep you safe and to keep this community and [organization name redacted] alive in the face of this crisis. We will do our utmost to not let [organization name redacted]  go bankrupt, and we will take all the actions that support that.”

I’m not here to judge anyone or to persuade or to convince you or anyone else of anything, much less to moralize. But statements like those I’ve just quoted are very disturbing.

My real point, however, is this:  Any persuasion or conviction, any change or transformation has to come from within you. You must use good judgment and clear thinking. But even before that, you must first be aware of (1) who you are in reality, (2) where you are in the world, (3) where you want to be, (3) that there’s a way to get there. If you’ve self-quarantined yourself and live in social-distance from the real world thanks to your addiction to your smartphone, your selfies, and social media, you need help to claw your way out of the hole you’ve thrown yourself into. In my next essay, I’ll discuss come of the science substantiating the adverse effects of pornography, and why it has little or no place in normal, non-addicted erotic expression. In the meantime, why don’t you just consider how much time you spend watching porn, how many times you can be entertained by the same script, and whether you really are enriched by the experience. We do know that the so-called “tantric” masseurs are enriched by their phony practices but when you really think about it, what kind of men need that kind of service? Interesting thought, isn’t it?

This new Sādhanārha (साधनार्ह) or Sādhanacakra (साधनचक्र) or spiritual practice cycle is particularly important because I will be publishing the all new, revised sādhanā exercises for use by śiṣya-s (शिष्य), aspirants, and some select seekers. Patrons will receive advance PDF inserts by email.

Because of the growing number of aspirants and seekers following Homoerotic Tantra℠:Mascul-IN-Touch℠, and because many of them are unable to participate in the ritual sessions due to their geographical location — the program was originally designed for local or retreat group participation but now has grown to international proportions — I have revised the materials to focus on solo-cultivation activities primarily. Dual-cultivation can still be done with a Tāntric Lover but will require some distance supervision, and will be reserved for patrons only.

I will continue to publish all materials in abridged format on the private Homoerotic Tantra℠:Mascul-IN-Touch℠ site, and will provide much abbreviated summaries on the public site. Because of the growth of the program and the time and resources required for preparation of the manual inserts, I have had to reserve the PDF materials for patrons only.

The Conclusion of the Current Cycle and the Start of the Next Cycle…

We will be concluding our ritual 108-day cycle of Homoerotic Tantra℠:Mascul-IN-Touch℠ on Sunday, April 19, 2020, the Pūrṇimā (पूर्णिमा) or the day of full moon, and a particularly special festival day on the Sanātanadharma (सनातनधर्म) calendar because it is the, Hanumajjayantī (हनुमज्जयन्ती), the birthday of Lord Hanuman. As you may know, Lord Hanuman is described as the ultimate symbol of devotion, perseverance, humility, and strength, the perfect embodiment of the Kṣatriyadharma (क्षत्रियधर्म) or the Warrior Path, and example for any Tāntric Warrior to emulate. He is said to be an ardent devotee of Lord Rama (in the epic Rāmāyaṇa (रामायण)).

We will be beginning a new 108-day cycle of Homoerotic Tantra℠:Mascul-IN-Touch℠ starting on Sunday, April 26, 2020, the day of Askaya Tritiya, or the Akṣayatṛtīyā (अक्षयतृतीया), the third day of the lunar half of the month of Vaiśākha (वैशाख). (April-May), which is the first month of the Sanātanadharma (सनातनधर्म) calendar. It is an especially auspicious day for starting any new venture, and so it is most appropriate to start the new cycle of the Homoerotic Tantra℠:Mascul-IN-Touch℠ program on that day.

The 108-day cycle starting on Sunday, April 26, 2020, will end on Wednesday, August 13, 2020 (in fact on Saturday, August 16, 2020 (112 days or 16 weeks), on the festival day of the Aja-Ekādaśī (अज-एकादशी), a day representing control of the body, emotions, behavior and food. The day is therefore auspicious for our  Sādhanacakra (साधनचक्र), our ritual practice cycle.

I realize that some of what I publish may be a bit strange for most of the men following Homoerotic Tantra℠:Mascul-IN-Touch℠, particularly because I tend to use a lot of foreign (Sanskrit) terms, and I plan the start and end of a cycle around what are called “auspicious” days, or particularly important days that benefit the performance of the cycle.

I also use the traditional terms and some neologisms I have created for special purposes, because Sanskrit is a very precise language. Moreover, the māntra-s (मन्त्र) we learn are traditionally repeated in the Sanskrit language or written in the Devanāgarī (देवनागरी) script for metaphysical purposes; the pronunciation of the syllables and the mystical value of the letters and sounds create the power of the māntra (मन्त्र).

The start and end days of the 108-day cycles are also chosen for a particular reason. I have explained the significance of the 108 days on the Meditation & Reflection site. Otherwise, I try to start and end a cycle on a day or date that is particularly symbolically important, and one which will have meaning for the men practicing the homoerotic Tāntric rituals and practices.

In this way, I hope to make the homoerotic yogic Tantra (तन्त्र) practices more meaningful and a broader learning experience for everyone.

Some practitioners of Tantra are ethical and responsible. They place the concept of ahiṃsā (अहिंसा) at the top of their list; do no harm. Homoerotic Tantra℠:Mascul-IN-Touch℠ has a policy of strict ethics.

In the United States and in Europe, organizations and institutions of all kinds are taking unprecedented steps to contain the Coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak, and to protect citizens from contagion. Schools are closed, government offices are closing, there is increased security and surveillance in healthcare facilities, health and fitness centers are closing, restaurants are limiting the number of patrons. The list goes on and on. That’s how organizations and institutions act responsibly.

Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch℠  is confronting the COVID-19 situation with similar measures. I am not accepting new clients until there is clear evidence that the plague has been contained, and spread has diminished. I am asking some very sensitive questions of every follower and śiṣya (शिष्य) particularly relating to recent travel to endemic areas, recent respiratory infections, possible contact with infected individuals, etc.

For the duration of this worldwide public health emergency I am recommending that followers and śiṣya-s avoid group activities, including group meditation, until the health authorities give the green light to such group activities. We are offering extensive online opportunities to those interested in avoiding unnecessary social contact.

We all have to take responsibility for each other and make sometimes great sacrifices to ensure the health and well-being of those around us.

As a professional and as a Tantric daka and psychospiritual care provider, I consider anything less than these measures to be unconscionable and irresponsible.

I am especially offended by the fake gurus who are neither Tantric, nor yogic, nor professional, but purely mercenary and pecuniary in their sales and marketing efforts, placing money and profit before the health, safety and well-being of their clients. Those irresponsible scoundrels are thinking of their own pockets, and are willing to place trusting and innocent men at risk of severe illness and even death, just to ensure their own financial interests and to avoid “bankruptcy!”

The materialistic frauds talk of community and Love, while counting their cash. They preach of support and brotherhood, while planning risk-laden events that fly in the face of the counsel of public health authorities and good judgment.

These men and their programs should be avoided at all cost! Unfortunately, it took a global crisis to force them from behind the masks and to expose their frauds.

Most of my readers know exactly what I am referring to and the persons to whom I am referring. Now you know them for what they are.

I can only hope that the men who have in the past trusted the frauds and scoundrels will wake up and use good judgment and not allow illusion or delusion to extinguish their divine inner light.

Statement on the Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic

I recently received an email notification from a well-known so-called Tantra practitioner, who allegedly organizes events in the United States and the UK as well as in other venues. They are group events and they involve intimate contact among participants. The email I received provided a link to the practitioner’s Internet site, where he and his partner had published a rambling, poorly written, so-called update on the Coronavirus situation, and how it would affect their upcoming events. The so-called Update was wordy, long, ignorant, and revealed a disturbing irresponsibility on the part of the practitioner and his partner.

It was obvious from the very start that the organizer and his partner are very concerned about their financial situation, and they mentioned the possibility of bankruptcy as an outcome of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the practitioner was clearly concerned about the financial impact on him and his so-called community, his approach the situation, I found, was irresponsible and ignorant. To his credit, though, he did provide a couple of links to public health organizations, but his wordy ramblings about “community,” “love,” and possible “bankruptcy” far outweighed any facts he might have included in his diatribe.

The fact that he claims that he will be traveling from the UK to areas in the United States is certaintly of concern, give the recommendations to keep travel to a minimum, or even to avoid travel. The practitioner seems unconcerned, since he could be financially disadvantaged.

He also seems oblivious to the fact that even though he explicitly suggests that some of his events will be in isolated venues and in smallish groups (up to 20 men!), he seems to ignore the fact that participants are coming from heavily populated, at-risk areas, and are clearly potential, if not probable carriers of the COVID-19!

The practitioner and his partner do not appear to have any medical or healthcare qualifications or experience but offer chat opportunities for men who are afraid or anxious about the situation. Sheer arrogance and total lack of humility.

This practitioner has been the subject of previous complaints and criticism because of his ignorant marketing and over-the-top claims. He is not practicing yogic Tantra and is offering merely sextasy for sale. His own angst comes through his poor writing with the utmost clarity, and he seems not to benefit from any yogic practice or meditation, since he and his partner are,in his words,

“What we do know for certain is that Love does not know fear. When we sit in our heart centre, we sit in our core of love. That core is something that nobody and nothing can take away.”

Well, to be very frank and honest, I don’t think that COVID-19 gives a damn about love or “heart center” or whether the practitioner offers a hug! And COVID-19 doesn’t give a whit about Tantra or about diploma courses.

Bottom line is this: the practitioner and his partner are clearly self-interested and self-centered. They are worried about their programs and not about their participants. They use a lot of words to say very little, and what they do manage to say is not worth hearing. I had to stop reading the “Update,” because it was so irresponsible.

The bottom line, dear brothers, is that the practitioner intends to put his participants at risk, and is attempting to reassure them that he, the practitioner and his collaborators, can safeguard their health and well-being. He does not intend to put his programs on hold much less to cancel any out of consideration for the dangerous situation his is exposing his so-called friends and brothers to.

After all is said and done, I have spent considerable time researching the current state of the pandemic, and I’d like to share some facts with my followers and readers. I have included some informative links at the end of this article and urge you all to visit those links and to review the information provided there.

I have published some very rigid provisions of personal and professional conduct in my Code of Ethics, which is firmly grounded in the yogic yama-s (यम) and niyama-s (नियम). First and foremost is ahiṃsā (अहिंसा), do no harm. I only wish some of the snake-oil salesman and fake-tantrikas would adhere to similar ethics.

The Facts

Coronavirus or COVID-19 is a virus that focuses on the respiratory system; it is the virus that has caused severe pneumonia, and was first identified in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. Since the first reports of human cases in China, COVID-19,  is now spreading person-to-person and is infecting growing numbers of people around the world, and has been reported in more than 50 countries; about 94% of the cases are in China.

Coronaviruses are not new and make up a large family of viruses that are common in humans, and other species. From time to time, we see new (a.k.a. “novel” in CDC language) coronaviruses that have not previously been described in human beings. There are many types of human Coronaviruses, including some that commonly cause mild upper-respiratory tract illnesses in human beings.

This virus was originally thought to have emerged from an animal source that ultimately mutated to infect humans, but now we are seeing this virus being spread from person to person. As of this writing, it remains unclear how easily this virus can spread among people.

COVID-19 can cause mild cold-like symptoms as well as severe pneumonia requiring ventilator support. In 5% of cases, it can be virulent and in some susceptible people such as the very young, the elderly, immunocompromised people (immune deficiency diseases or chemotherapy), cancer patients, weakened persons, diabetics, etc. the virus can cause severe pulmonary disease, which has been observed in previous outbreaks of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), for example.

How does COVID-19 spread? Epidemiologists don’t know exactly but their current understanding of how this virus spreads and causes COVID-19 disease is based on what they know about Coronaviruses in general. It is believed that the virus is spread person to person, and like the common cold it is spread by droplets generated when a person coughs or sneezes. Exposure usually requires relatively close contact (a radius of about 6 feet) with  someone who is infected but not be clearly symptomatic. The greatest risk of contagion and infection is when a person has symptoms. It’s important to understand that people have become sick after contact with someone with few or no symptoms at all. Spread by an asymptomatic person is unclear but still demands caution.

COVID-19 can cause mild cold-like symptoms but can also cause a severe pneumonia requiring ventilator support, and even death.

Coronavirus is thought to be more contagious than the seasonal flu

The latest areas of widespread infection and disease include China, South Korea, Japan, Iran and Italy.

COVID-19 may spread relatively easily in a close community. In fact, it is estimated that that for every 1 person that is infected, potentially 2 other people can get the infection if they do not protect themselves with simple prevention measures, such as hand washing, covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, etc.

Coronavirus is thought to be more contagious than the seasonal flu but much less than other highly contagious viruses, such as measles or chicken pox.

Some simple prevention measures

Many people are asking how they can protect themselves. Well, common simple everyday personal hygiene and courtesy are preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, and they will work with this novel Coronavirus. Some simple prevention measures include: washing your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. You should avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Obviously, you should avoid close contact with people who are sick, and presumed infected with COVID-19, which is common sense whether it’s COVID-19, the flu, or even a cold. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Very importantly stay home when you are sick. So many people are so inconsiderate and stupid, even if they have sick time benefits that they go to work in crowded offices etc. when sneezing and coughing. Self-isolation in any contagious or infectious disease is a personal responsibility, and if employees are such irresponsible idiots to go to work and put their co-workers at risk, employers should send them home immediately out of concern for the health and well-being of the other employees.

Even if you have done everything right, you still need to be able to identify the symptoms of COVID-19 disease.

The current symptoms reported in patients with COVID-19 included mild to severe respiratory illness, fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. According to the CDC symptoms may appear anywhere from 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus.

If you develop a fever and symptoms of respiratory illness, such as cough or shortness of

breath, or if you have recently returned from travel in an affected area (such as China, South Korea, Japan, Iran, or Italy), you should contact your primary care physician or a  health care professional and inform him of your recent travel or close contact. Your doctor or the healthcare professional will cooperate with the public health authorities in your area and the CDC to determine if you need to be tested for COVID-19.

Public Health Response and Current Situation

Although this is an early stage of a possible pandemic, it is just an emerging, rapidly evolving situation, about which the public health authorities still now little about but the CDC will continue to provide updated information as it becomes available.

Reliable information and ongoing updates are available about CDC’s response to COVID-19 online. (See the links at the end of this article.)

Although there are a number of concentrations of COVID-19 affecting entire communities, it is still a relatively low risk in many communities. But that may give many people a false sense of security; we may still eventually have cases of COVID-19 in more communities, affecting wider regions. We need to keep in mind that this is a very rapidly evolving situation and the risk assessment may change daily.

Obviously, we can’t rely on wishful thinking of people in La-La-Land, or on the media that irresponsibly reports false or incorrect facts. Fear and anxiety are powerful forces if people don’t use their heads and think clearly.

We know that cases in the US have done very well, in part due to access to healthcare and the preparedness of hospital providers caring for the individual cases but the sad fact is that most people are inconsiderate and behave stupidly. Another sad fact is the shameful lack of access to healthcare for a large number of people.

COVID-19 is here in the United States, in the UK, and we have to face that fact. People are infected and people are infecting other people. The governments have been slow to respond with adequate treatment of the cases even though the first infection with COVID-19 in the United States was reported on January 21, 2020. The outbreak in China was well known some time before that. That is not surprising when you consider how irresponsible China is with industrial farming, antibiotics, and the fact that Americans are kept unaware of the number and quantity of Chinese meat and other products arrive on our tables! There’s no telling what we are being exposed to, and our government is at fault for dropping the ball!

So the question is very reasonable whether you are at risk for COVID-19 or another plague from a package or products shipping from China? Well, the good news is that, in general, Coronaviruses don’t survive very long on surfaces, there is presumably a low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at room temperatures. But don’t feel too safe too soon! There’s an awful lot that we still don’t know about this new strain of Coronavirus (COVID-19), particularly about how it spreads.

Coronaviruses are thought to be spread most often by respiratory droplets. Currently there is no evidence to support transmission of the virus causing COVID-19 associated with imported goods and there have not been any cases reported in the United States that are attributed to contact with imported products but that isn’t very convincing.

We know what we know but we don’t know what’s being kept from us. Do we?

Yes. COVID-19 is here and if you start to feel sick with fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, within 14 days after you think you’ve been exposed, seek medical care right away. Before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room, call ahead and tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms, so that they can take infection control precautions, if necessary, to safeguard the health and well-being of the other patients.

First and foremost:

  • Avoid contact with others. Do not travel if you feel sick, and certainly not if you are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing, and dispose of the tissue immediately or place your contaminated clothing in the wash.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to avoid spreading the virus to others. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol, if soap and water are not available.

The penis, cock, dick, whatever you like to call it is an awesome and powerful symbol of maleness and masculinity. It’s been on everyone’s mind since time began but no one seems to know much about it.

In Homoerotic Tantra℠:Mascul-IN-Touch℠  a great deal of ritual and spirituality centers on this concentration of masculine energy and power.

Judging by what I have seen on social media, most men are stuck in the animal or paśu (पशु) stage of development. The paśu, or more properly called the puruṣapaśu (पुरुषपशु), the animal man, a stage in a man’s development where he focuses on animal urges. In some writings in Tantra this is also called the anal-genital stage, a very primitive stage in a man’s development but one that we all have to go through. Some of us get through it some get trapped in it and never leave it.

In Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch℠  I teach a whole series of exercises, practices, rituals, and sadhana-tapas (साधन-तपस्) (spiritual practices) focusing on the phallus or the liṅga (लिङ्ग) or liṅgam (लिङ्गम्), so it shouldn’t be surprising that I feel it’s very important for followers and aspirants to know something about this emblem of masculinity.

From about March 15, 2020, I will start publishing a series of essays about the vajra (वज्र) or penis and the liṅgam (लिङ्गम्) or phallus (erect penis). Here is a preview of some of the modules:

I hope that by the time we reach the level of ritual adoration of the Tantric Lover’s liṅgam in his manifestation as iṣṭadeva (इष्टदेव) or personal deity in the form of the Tantric Lover, followers and aspirants will have a understanding and appreciation why the liṅgamis an object of worship in the context of homoerotic tantra, and why your Tantric Lover’s semen is considered the Tantric eucharist, the holy communion of Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch .

As a teacher, spiritual guide, your Daka, and as a practitioner of Homoerotic Tantra:Mascul-IN-Touch℠  I am grateful to be able to say that the knowledge I will be sharing is not only fascinating, but will raise you to a higher level as men-who-love-men and practice homoerotic Tantra.

I also hope that by sharing knowledge about the male body and its function on a biological level, followers and aspirants will have a better appreciation of the spirituality associated with their maleness, their masculinity, and the divine symbol of masculinity, the liṅgam.
